Making My Own Business Cards

When I started out as a freelance writer three years ago, I decided to try making my own business cards.  I was just freelancing on the side back then, and at the job I held then, I had access to plenty of cardstock, high quality printers, and manual paper cutters such as guillotine cutters.  I was able to print and cut out a whole stack of business cards with my first logo and card design.

I made business cards a few times before I started having them made for me, so I learned quite a few things about making business cards.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Use the heaviest cardstock you can find.  You don’t want your business cards to feel flimsy.
  • For a more sophisticated look, use heavy photo paper.  Just make sure to spray the finished cards with some sort of artist’s spray, to keep the ink from rubbing off in a sweaty pocket or hand.
  • Use a sharp paper cutter for the cleanest lines.  Be very careful when cutting your cards.  You may even prefer to look into business card cutters for the most professional look.
  • Don’t use too many different fonts.  It’s okay to put your name and/or title in a different font to make it stand out, but be careful not to make it look too cluttered.
  • Use a company logo.  You don’t have to get too fancy, but having your own logo does make your business cards look more professional.

I hope these tips help you out making homemade business cards — but don’t forget, as you can afford the expense, there are many affordable printers who can make these for you!
