As you start to set up your first website, you’ll find that there are a lot of decisions to be made. You’ll need to choose design templates, select your content and make the site search-engine friendly. When the design is ready, you’ll need to make the site go live which requires choosing a web host provider. As you try to do that, you’ll find that you have many different options when it comes to web hosting.
To better understand the choices, here’s a look at some common types of web hosting and who they work best for:
- Blog hosting. This is for very simple sites that are basically just blogs and won’t have a lot of other content on them.
- Free web hosting. Like the name implies, this is web hosting that doesn’t cost anything. It’s ad-supported so it’s not the best choice for a business that doesn’t want to run other company’s ads on its website. It can work for people with personal websites, though.
- Shared web hosting. Your site will be on the same server as other sites. This means that control of the admin stuff belongs to the hosting company. This is good for people who don’t want to have to deal with the details of running their site.
- Dedicated web hosting. This is the opposite of shared web hosting in that the site is on its own server which is entirely controlled by the website owner. This is often a good choice for business hosting.
- VPS. This is a type of hosting that’s in-between shared and dedicated hosting. You have your own portioned-off area of a shared server.
The different hosting options reflect the different services of level of site administration control that are required by the website owner. Choosing the right one means looking at your needs and picking the level of service that best meets those needs.
