The mystique of a prehistoric advanced society has mystified students of the unknown and attracted academics for a score of centuries. Fortunately today’s student can now enjoy a large selection of literature treating different aspects of the legend of Atlantis, both from a scholarly perspective and the best recent science fiction & fantasy novels.
There are more versions of what the nature of this fantastic island entailed and how the wisdom of the ancients can be recovered than practically any other story of a Golden Age. The legend of a lost continent which predated our earliest records has engaged the imagination of generations exactly for the reason that it appeals so strongly as our own culture reaches heights that may well presage catastrophe.
Renowned prophet Edgar Cayce conceived of Atlantis as a vast continent, rivaling the dimensions of Greenland. According to the prophet’s complete version, the Atlanteans were accustomed to many advanced psionic talents and mechanisms, and were the progenitors of the peculiarly similar solar-worshiping peoples of the ancient Egyptians and the Empires of native America. The subject is in many cases grouped with reincarnation and past lives stories. Well-known philosopher Plato originally wrote about a sunken civilization, that he named Atlantis, about twenty-four hundred years ago. According to Plato, the lost Island lay "beyond the pillars of Hercules" and met a fateful end approximately one hundred centuries earlier.
Conjectures suggesting the site of the ruins vary widely from the Indonesia to the Carribbean, although, naturally the most promising options that are islands in the vicinity, most notably Crete and Cyprus.
The world may never know the real history, nevertheless, we’d be foolish to doubt: human kind has attained great levels of sophistication rising and falling in a cycle of rise and catastrophe, possibly many times, prior to what we commonly regard as the "beginning".
