Remembering My Grandfather

My grandfather was as a giant of a man. He would visit when I was a boy and quite literally toss me around like a sack of potatoes. I would ride on his back and he would not so much as twitch a muscle in moving me. It was all that much more impressive because he was 61 years old and I was not a small child – but years of hard labor and good eating habits had made him strong and healthy.

Which made his early passing at the hands of a rare blood disease that much stranger. It was a hard time for everyone and as a child, I took solace in one of the only things I could – his intriguing collection of beer memorabilia. There were dozens of old bottles, beer koozies, custom coozies, and stadium cups from around the country. There were metal signs, electric lights, free stuffed animals, old collector’s edition boxes. He had never drank much in his life, but he had sure collected the materials from those who had.

I still have his collection today, saved and set aside in a special room to grow and carry on. It is an odd way to remember a man such as my grandfather, but it is also the best possible way.
